Energy sector
The sixth hydroelectric generating set was launched to work at Sayano-Shushenskaya Power Plant on February 24, 2010. This generating set was least damaged during the emergency that occurred on August 17, 2009, which killed 75 people. The launch took place during Vladimir Putin’s working visit to the station.
Paper plant
Enisey Pulp and Paper Plant is on the verge of stopping operations due to debts. During negotiations at the regional government of Krasnoyarsk it was agreed that energy providers promise not to cut off electricity and heat until the middle of March.
Enisey Pulp and Paper Plant is owned by RUSAL structures. Current debt to energy providers makes 150 million rubles.
Earthing needed
Federal service of ecological, technological and nuclear supervision of Baikal area (Rostekhnadzor) published the results of investigation of fire at SUAL-PM facility in Shelekhov. The fire killed one of the workers, two more workers were injured, equipment and the building were also severely damaged by the fire.
According to the final report, administration of the facility did not pay enough attention to the industrial safety regulations and compliance with them. As a result, static electricity accumulated and caused fire.
Baikal area
Meeting of deputies of Buryatia and Irkutsk Region did not occur. The deputies of neighboring federal subjects had agreed to meet on February 27, 2010 to discuss the situation at Baikalsk Pulp and Paper Plant. Both regions are worried because the Russian government issued permission to launch production cycle involving waste water sewage in the central nature preservation zone of Baikal.
Family code
Deputies of the Legislative Assembly of Zabaikalsky Region prepared the package of amendments to the Family Code of Russia and passed it over to the region’s senator in the Council of the Federation. The major amendment suggests legalizing the old Buryat tradition to stem the child’s last name from the first name of the father. This may not be a successful project because it goes against some federal legal norms.
