Sakhalin makes friends with Australia

Margaret Twomey, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Australia in Russia, visited Sakhalin Region last week. She was greeted by the governor Alexander Khoroshavin and a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Vladimir Nosov.

Alexander Khoroshavin expressed hope that the economic and cultural relations between Sakhalin and Australia would strengthen and extent in the future. Local businessmen have been actively buying cattle for animal farms. But more cooperation in industry, agriculture, transport and tourism is very welcome.

Back pay process

Magistrate Court of Poronaisk, Sakhalin Region, judged to fine a local company general director On Chun San who failed to pay wages to his 86 employees for 6 months in a row. The court recognized that the company owner had enough money to pay wages, but failed to do so due to personal reasons and against the law. The total amount of back pay accounted for 1.5 million rubles.

The Ark

International Festival of Puppet Theaters “The Ark” took place in Sakhalin Region on September 4-9, 2009. The festival presented performances for both children and adults. Participants of the festivals have been very much impressed by the level of organization, sensitivity and thankfulness of the Sakhalin’s audience.

Regional hospital

The governor of Sakhalin Alexander Khoroshavin visited Sakhalin’s Regional Hospital. The facility has seen major renovations in the past years thank to the support of the governor. Thus, there is a modern cardiologic center, which is equipped for profound diagnostic procedures as well as complex heart surgeries. The neurological division now has a reanimation block with the state-of-the-art contemporary equipment. In the coming years it is planned to reconstruct the hospital buildings and improve its territory.

Mormon Church

Prosecution service of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk has completed investigation of activities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The LDS Church, also known as Mormon Church, was officially registered as a religious organization in Sakhalin in 2000.

It has been running English-language classes for people by American missionaries. Although the classes have been free-of-charge, the church didn’t have proper license to run this kind of educational courses. The case has been forwarded to the magistrate court of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to decide upon the punishment for this administrative charge.

Gray whale found dead

A body of a dead gray whale was found on the cost of the Sea of Okhotsk. Gray whales are registered in the Russian Red Book of endangered species. There are only 110 whales of this kind left in the Okhotsk-Korea population. Gray whales are considered to be a critically endangered species worldwide.

The whale’s body was discovered by the specialists of Exxon Neftegaz Limited and Sakhalin Energy Investment Company. A special commission has been formed to investigate the reasons of the whale’s death.

Gazprom in Sakhalin

Last week the governor of Sakhalin Region Alexander Khoroshavin met with the deputy chairman of the governance committee of Gazprom Alexander Ananenkov. They discussed the plans of gasification of the island, gas pipeline Sakhalin-Khabarovsk-Vladivostok and extraction of hydrocarbons. 

The governor of the island points out that gasification will help diversify not only Sakhalin’s economy, but the economy of the entire Far East. Alexander Ananekov agreed that there needs to be a shift from the raw materials economy. There should be refineries to process oil extracted by Sakhalin-3 project.

The governor of Sakhalin and Gazprom also reached common ground regarding social programs support on the island.
